Large scale polymer direct manufacturing (LSPDM) is a large-scale additive manufacturing (AM) process using reinforced polymers to quickly create large, cost effective parts. LSPDM is an innovative technology new to the market that has countless opportunities for use in the aerospace industry in manufacturing, tooling, and training applications. Lockheed Martin has been working with LSPDM for several years, but recently procured a Cincinnati Inc. (CI) Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) system that is operated by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company in Marietta, GA. As Lockheed Martin pioneers the development of this technology for Aerospace, there are many unknowns and technical hurdles that must be overcome and addressed. Lockheed Martin is working to characterize materials for given applications, define design parameters, and determine post-processing best practices. The LSPDM team in Marietta has been working with organizations across the Lockheed Martin Corporation to determine the best suited applications and develop processes for them. LSPDM has already proven to have significant cost and schedule savings over many traditional manufacturing methods for tooling, mockup, fabrication, and training applications.
