Automated lamination processes such as automated tape laying (ATL) and automated fiber placement (AFP) for composites has for many years been based on different machine configurations. In order to have these processes, aerospace companies were required to buy two (2) very expensive machines. In recent years, machine suppliers have developed equipment that will do both ATL and AFP processing, and therefore the customer only needs to buy one machine. As additive manufacturing (AM) is beginning to be more utilized in the aerospace industry, there are machines that will do both ATL and AFP processing, as well as AM capabilities. This presentation will provide an overview of new composites equipment and a user’s case study.
