Manufacturing efficiency and composites fabrication stands to advance significantly through the application of automatic inspection. This technology overcomes three prevalent hindrances connected with manual inspection: time required for setup, unnoticed FOD and other flaws and the opportunity to correct flaws before they become defects. An automatic inspection system and several applications are described. The presentation includes implementation details such as the data required to make inspections, tolerances, operation in production, flaw resolution methods, and traceability/documentation. Examples in automatic and manual composite layup are provided. Techniques for developing new applications will be discussed.
