More complex robotic solutions for laying up composite materials are being offered by several machine companies. The robots themselves have been improved and upgraded to meet stricter performance requirements and the layup heads are more compact and able to achieve higher productivities than before. However, the most attractive capability of robotic lamination equipment is not so much the higher productivity but rather the complex geometries that it can layup. Using 3-4 additional axes beyond the robots own 6-axis has made for some very impressive layup geometries. Adding the diversity of layup heads for both types of materials – thermoset and thermoplastics – has made robotic solutions the most versatile for production and prototyping. This presentation will show the various capabilities of these modern systems, and how they make it easier to enter the high performance composite layup market.
