In recognition of the valuable contributions within the composites manufacturing industry, the Composites Manufacturing Tech Group, which is part of SME’s Plastics, Composites & Coatings Community, developed the Excellence in Composites Manufacturing Award to acknowledge the valuable roles that both large and small manufacturers play within the industry.
Additionally, The J.H. “Jud” Hall Composites Manufacturing Award honors the late Judge H. Hall (1931-85) for his dedication to making the former Composites Manufacturing Association of SME (CMA/SME) an established group within the composites manufacturing industry, and for his contributions to the development of composites technology. The award is presented annually to an individual who has contributed to the composites manufacturing or tooling technology through leadership, technical developments, patents or educational activities.
The awards were bestowed at AeroDef on Wednesday, March 8, 2017.
2017 Jud Hall Composites Manufacturing Award Winner
Dimitrije Milovich was awarded the 2017 J.H. “Jud” Hall Composites Manufacturing Award for his leadership of Radius Engineering Inc. Radius supplies companies worldwide with engineering, tooling and manufacturing equipment to enable lower-cost, higher-quality manufacturing.
Milovich is president and CEO of Radius Engineering, which he co-founded in 1987. His early career in composites began in 1975 with the development and commercialization of one of the sporting goods industry’s first advanced composites snowboards, the Winterstick.
With the establishment of Radius, Milovich continued innovating in composites manufacturing. He was the principal investigator on numerous SBIR and commercial research projects, including U.S. Air Force and NASA contracts on innovative composites tooling and low-cost, net-shape manufacturing. His focus for the last 20 years has been net-shape, out-of-autoclave (OOA) manufacturing processes such as resin transfer molding (RTM) and same-qualified resin transfer molding (SQRTM), which are now used by major aircraft manufacturers.
Milovich is also the holder of 18 patents in the fields of composite tooling, aircraft and sporting goods manufacturing, and sporting goods design. He has published and presented numerous papers at SME and SAMPE conferences. Milovich has been cited in numerous articles on composites manufacturing in publications such as the “SAMPE Journal” and “High-Performance Composites.” He is a member of SME, SAMPE and the American Helicopter Society.
2017 Excellence in Composites Manufacturing Winner
Radius Engineering Inc.
Salt Lake City
Radius Engineering Inc. was awarded the 2017 Excellence in Composites Manufacturing Award for supplying net-shape manufacturing technology and equipment contributing to improvements in design, quality and reduced manufacturing costs for numerous manufacturing companies throughout the aerospace composites industry.
Radius Engineering has been a leader in out-of-autoclave aerospace composites manufacturing technology for nearly 30 years with a focus on net-shape composites manufacturing processes such as resin transfer molding (RTM) and same-qualified resin transfer molding (SQRTM).
Radius is unusual in the industry because, rather than supplying composite parts, it is an open resource for manufacturing technology, which the company supplies in the form of engineering services, process development, tooling and turnkey composites manufacturing equipment. For example, Radius provided the technology, training and equipment for manufacturing current aircraft structures such as the leading-edge slats of the Boeing 787, the wingtip extension of the Global Hawk, and most recently, flaps of the Embraer E-2 aircraft, all of which are built using SQRTM technology.
Over the course of its history, Radius has a record of successful commercial applications, and its focus has remained the same — to support customers’ net-shape manufacturing and cost reduction through better engineering, process technology and equipment.
