Dr. Hong-Chao Zhang is E.L. Derr Endowment professor and the Department Interim Chairman of Industrial, Manufacturing and Systems Engineering at Texas Tech University. He is also appointed as distinguished professor of nation’s 1000 recruitment plan of China in the School of Mechanical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology. Dr. Zhang has four years industrial experience as a machinist and process planner. He has also accumulated 27 total years of experience in academia by teaching and conducting research in the areas of manufacturing processes and systems.
Dr. Zhang served as director of Center for Applied Research in Advanced Manufacturing, Under his leadership, the center received several research grants from the state of the government, and developed close to a dozen research projects that directly collaborated with Texas industrial companies, including Dell Computer, Hewlett-Packard Computer, Texas Instruments, Applied Materials in Austin, SemiTech, Raytheon in Dallas, Kelly Electronic Products Disassembly and Recycling Institute, etc. His achievements are well shared with industrial partners.
Dr. Zhang’s research interests lie in Remanufacturing for Mechanical Equipment, Environmentally Benign Product Design and Manufacturing, Manufacturing Systems and Material Processing, Manufacturing Enterprise Systems, Reverse Manufacturing and Reverse Logistics, Product and Process Modeling, Automated Tolerancing Analysis and Synthesis, and Intelligent Manufacturing.
Dr. Zhang has raised $18,993,327 research funding from NSF, Texas ATP, NIST, SME and other government and industry agencies, in which about $9.1 million are cash funds from US agencies, and 9.15 million from Chinese agencies (all cash funding are all competitive research grants), and $0.7 million are in-kind capital equipment funds. Currently, he has three research proposals with close to 1 million requests are under review by NSF. His research results are shared by institutions and industry companies, such as Hewlett Packard, Motorola, Intel, Dell Computer, Raytheon, Texas Instruments, and others.
Dr. Zhang has totally 253 publications, including two research reference/text books, three conference proceedings (editorial work), seven book chapters, over 120 referred journal papers, and 136 referred conference papers with total 4753 citations and H index of 30 (google scholar). He served as over 50 major invited speakers for industry and government agencies and established wide collaborative linkages with industry. As a well-known educator in the area of manufacturing engineering, Dr. Zhang has instructed over 2000 undergraduate students and instructed also over 1500 graduate students. He has supervised 22 PhD dissertations and 20 Master thesis, also served more than 50 graduate committee members.
Dr. Zhang has served members of many national and international committees. He has been invited as associate editor in three international journals and serves as advisory board member in the International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, IJAMT published by Springer London, UK, and editorial board member for the Robotics and Computer Integrated Manufacturing, published by Pergamon, London, UK and for the International Journal of Sustainable Manufacturing published by Inderscience Publishers. Dr. Zhang was also the guest editor for Special Issue on Environmentally Conscious Manufacturing for Engineering Design and Automation, Vol. 4, 1997, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York. Meanwhile, Dr. Zhang has reviewed submitted publications for more than 45 international journals and many national and international conferences and symposia.
Dr. Zhang is very active to participate in many other professional society activities. He has organized the first Environmentally Conscious Manufacturing Symposium in 1995 for ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition, and in 1997 he has organized the second symposium by the same event. He is also very active to participate and organize of
IEEE’s International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment (ISEE) and the society of the International Academy of Production Engineering (CIRP). He served varies of duties as
symposium Co-Chairs, Technical Committee Members, Education Co-Chairs, as well as Program Co-Chairs. Because of his significant contributions to the professional societies, he was elected as ASME Fellow in 2009, CIRP Fellow in 2011 and SME Fellow 2016 respectively.
