SpaceX to Build BFR Rocket, Spaceship at Port of Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Times (4/16, Masunaga) reports that Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti “confirmed Monday that SpaceX will build the company’s BFR rocket and spaceship system at a facility at the Port of LA.” SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has indicated that the BFR eventually will replace the company’s Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy. The rocket is also “key to SpaceX’s eventual goal of colonizing Mars.” In a statement Thursday, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell suggested that the port will play an “increasingly important role in our mission to help make humanity multi-planetary.” The LA Board of Harbor Commissioners is expected to approve the plan this Thursday.
